What plug adapter do I need for Japan?

Japan uses Type A and Type B plugs (same shape as US plugs), but the voltage is 100V (lower than US 120V). Most modern devices like phones and laptops work fine, but hair dryers and other appliances may need a voltage converter. Japan is unique with its 50/60Hz frequency split - eastern Japan (Tokyo) uses 50Hz while western Japan (Osaka) uses 60Hz.

Do I need a voltage converter for Europe?

Check your device's power label. If it says "Input: 100-240V 50/60Hz", you only need a plug adapter (Type C or F). If your device only supports 110-120V, you'll need a voltage converter for Europe's 230V. Most modern phone chargers, laptop adapters, and camera chargers are dual voltage and work globally.

What is the difference between Type C and Type F plugs?

Type C (Europlug) has two round pins with no ground connection, rated for 2.5A maximum current. Type F (Schuko) has two round pins plus side grounding clips, rated for 16A. Type F is safer for high-power appliances and is the standard in Germany, Austria, Netherlands, and many other European countries. A Type C plug can fit into a Type F socket, but not vice versa.

Which countries use Type G plugs (British 3-pin)?

Type G is used in the UK, Ireland, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kenya, Cyprus, Malta, and many former British colonies. It features a built-in fuse for extra safety and shutters that prevent children from inserting objects. The voltage is 230V at 50Hz.

Can I use US appliances in Europe?

You need both a plug adapter (Type C or F) AND possibly a voltage converter. US appliances run on 120V, while Europe uses 230V. Check your device label: if it supports 100-240V input, only a plug adapter is needed. For single-voltage devices like hair dryers, you need a voltage converter capable of handling the device's wattage.

What plug type does China use?

Mainland China uses Type A (two flat parallel pins, like US) and Type I (three pins in an inverted V pattern, like Australia). The standard voltage is 230V at 50Hz. Note that Hong Kong and Macau use Type G (British 3-pin) as they have separate electrical standards. European Type C round-pin plugs no longer fit modern Chinese sockets after the 2021 GB1002 standard update.

Modern phone and laptop chargers usually support 100-240V wide voltage, but high-power appliances like hair dryers and irons usually only support single voltage. Check device labels carefully before use.

Prepare Proper Adapters

Travel plug adapters only change the plug shape, not the voltage. If your device doesn't support the destination voltage, you also need a transformer. Choose a multi-function travel adapter with USB ports.

Mind Power Limits

When using a transformer, make sure the power rating matches. Transformer power should be at least 1.5 times the device power, otherwise it may cause device damage or safety hazards.
